Audio Companion is a versatile MP3 converter with ripping,
encoding, and decoding features. It also will capture and convert audio
via the sound card so you can line in a LP or cassette source and convert it to
digital audio.
The ripper has 10 options for various error correction but on
the CDs I tested, the audio sounded fine without error correction (although they
were pretty clean CDs). For converting to MP3, Audio Companion supports
just about any encoder. Internal options included LAME v.3.85, Fraunhofer
ACM codec, and a WMA encoder. The Audio Splitter lets you capture any
audio through the sound card and mess with the volume levels.
Overall, Audio Companion offers a lot of flexibility in one
program. The registration process is a bit archaic and requires a form to
be filled out. However, the program may be worth it for the $30
registration cost. The trial version limits batch encoding and audio
capturing.
