Since Windows 2000 was not supported, I could not test this program but here is the basic rundown:

AudioActive Production Studio 2.0 and the Professional version are audio converters that will extract audio from your CD, encode to MP3, and even decode MP3 back to WAV.  The MP3 encoding engine is from Fraunhofer so you know you are getting genuine MP3 from the inventors of the format.  The basic differences between the professional edition and regular edition is that the professional program will let you encode from 8kbps up to 256kbps (only up to 128kbps is supported in the slim version).  Also, the professional version will allow you to batch encode any number of files versus 20 in the cheaper version.    The rest of the differences are mostly command line features that give you greater encoding control in the professional edition.

There is a 30-day trial of this program for you to get a feel for it and see if it is what you are looking for.  The quality seems to be there but only hands on tests will verify this.
