Exact Audio Copy  

Exact Audio Copy is a freeware ripper (actually cardware, just send a stamped post card to the author) that creates incredibly clean and accurate .wav files from your CDs.  The software comes with an automatic error correction device during ripping that detects errors such as dust and scratches and makes the necessary changes to produce an almost totally accurate wave.  If it can't correct the errors (which doesn't happen often), it tracks the errant position in the wave so you can manually fix it.  The software will not convert to mp3 on its own, you need a supported encoder to plug into it.

Exact Audio Copy is one of the best rippers I have come across and forms a quality MP3 converting combination with the LAME encoder.  You can download an uncompiled LAME v. 3.93 encoder, compile it, and plug it in to EAC.  The learning curve on EAC is a bit high compared to other rippers but once you get going, you won't go back.
