Fre:ac is a free audio converter with a very strange name. It converts between MP3, MP4/M4A, WMA, Ogg, Flac, AAC, WAV, and Bonk file formats. It also includes a CD ripper to take your CD audio and convert it to any of those file format.
With the ability to convert between these file formats you can easily bypass some of the DRM restrictions on some formats like iTunes AAC. Just convert your iTunes collection to MP3 or another format and presto!, you can listen to it on any audio device you want.
The included CD ripper can look up track and artist information automatically online to name your tracks so you don’t have to do it yourself. The program itself is very small so you could install it on a USB drive and take it wherever you want. There is also support for modern multi-core computers so the ripping and encoding process could be faster than other programs that don’t have this feature. You can also use the program in a variety of languages. Fre:ac is completely free and has no advertising or any other tricks to make money off you. Highly recommended.
